If you are suffering from muscular or joint aches and pains, and are seeking orthopedic examination tests near Pittsburgh PA, trust DiCesare Orthopedic Medicine with your complete orthopedic care. Founder Dr. Jacob DiCesare is an orthopedic specialist with over a decade of clinical experience.  Having come from a traditional, high-volume orthopedic practice, he felt that orthopedic medicine needed a more personalized, patient-focused approach, and DiCesare Orthopedic Medicine was created.

Dr. Jacob DiCesare has earned a reputation as the “Gentle Injector” due to his ability to administer joint injections in the most painless way possible. During his tenure working at a high volume orthopedic practice, he became well-versed in musculoskeletal ultrasound and regenerative medicine. He was also the first non-operative Sports Medicine physician at the practice, and gained extensive experience in non-surgical treatment of acute and chronic injuries.

Dr. DiCesare completed a Family Practice residency at UPMC/St. Margaret, and a Sports Medicine Fellowship with the Allegheny Health Network. His sports medicine background makes him uniquely qualified to identify and treat injuries that result from acute trauma, such as trips, falls, and accidents.

Special Tests for Orthopaedic Examination in Greensburg, PA

At DiCesare Orthopedic Medicine, we provide thorough orthopedic exams that take into account your complete medical history. The doctor will ask you about any past surgeries or injuries, family history of certain conditions (such as arthritis or diabetes), current medications you take, allergies, and exactly when your pain started. We encourage our patients to be as specific as possible when describing their pain, so the doctor can make an accurate assessment of the cause of your pain.

To perform an orthopedic exam, Dr. DiCesare or a member of our skilled team will perform a variety of physical tests that help to determine your range of motion and identify any obvious signs of orthopedic issues. If deemed necessary, we will also perform a cutting-edge procedure known as a musculoskeletal ultrasound, a painless imaging test that can help diagnose musculoskeletal conditions. This type of ultrasound requires no special preparation and exposes patients to a minimal amount of radiation, ensuring safety and convenience for you during your exam.

Frequently Asked Question

What Is An Ortho Exam?

Ortho exam is short for orthopedic examination, and is used by clinicians in physical therapy and orthopedics to determine specific musculoskeletal problems. This helps the doctor make a diagnosis of orthopedic conditions and injuries.

What Can I Expect During An Ortho Exam?

When Dr. DiCesare performs an orthopedic exam, he will take into account your complete medical history, perform one or more physicals tests, and may conduct an imaging test.

  • Medical history exam - This covers past surgeries and injuries, underlying medical conditions, and current medications/allergies. Be very specific when describing your pain to the doctor.
  • Physical test - The physical portion of an ortho exam will help the doctor assess your flexibility, range of motion, and reflexes. You may be asked to walk, move up or down stairs, bend, and sit. You will also be inspected in the affected area/s for swelling, bruising, redness, or other visible signs of an orthopedic condition.
  • Imaging test - Dr. DiCesare may order imaging tests to get more in-depth information on your specific pain points. These tests can include X-rays, MRIs, or a musculoskeletal ultrasound.

What Is A Musculoskeletal Ultrasound?

A musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound is a special type of ultrasound that looks at your muscles and joints. It is used by orthopedic specialists to help diagnose tears, sprains, strains, tendon/ligament damage, nerve damage, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions. MSK ultrasounds are also used by Dr. DiCesare to guide joint injections to the appropriate target, ensuring an accurate delivery into the affected tissue.

An MSK ultrasound is non-invasive, completely painless, and does not expose patients to significant radiation. There is no special preparation required before getting this type of ultrasound.
